In between my morning appointments, I stopped to visit an elderly couple that I have known for a long time. They don’t get out much so I try to keep them connected with society. While I was there, we were talking about what they were going to do for flowers this year. They said they didn’t think they would have much as the flowers are getting expensive and taking care of them is more of a chore each year. It popped in my mind that I had large outdoor pot with geraniums that I kept alive all winter. They were just starting to bloom and are quite beautiful with the different colors of red and white. I asked them if they would like to have a large pot on their front step and they said that would be nice. I went back to the office and loaded up the large flowering pot and took it back to them. It fit perfectly on their front stoop and when they went outside to look at it, the wife got a little teary-eyed when looking at how beautiful the geraniums were. They couldn’t have thanked me enough. As I drove away, I was far more happy than they were because of the great feeling it gave me in giving rather than getting. We all should try to be a little more self-less than selfish. Believe me, it’ll give you a great feeling! We shouldn’t just make our own lives beautiful, but rather attempt to make Mason City and North Iowa more beautiful. Collectively, we can all make a difference.
