Oh my goodness! We definitely had some slippery-slope weather to deal with most of the day, and thank Heaven I managed to get all my out-of-office errands run without having any mishaps with either myself walking or driving my vehicle. Yes, it was definitely one of those most feared winter weather days. Of course with this climate change/global warming, the number of times we have weather like this during the winter, has increased dramatically over these past ten years.
My mid-morning appointment was with a buyer whom I’d been working with for weeks, who called yesterday asking if I’d be free today to write an offer on one of the homes I showed him, so a good hour or more was spent getting all the docs prepared and signed. Before I left, I was given a nickel tour of his workplace which was downright stunning, and since I’ve known the gentleman for a number of years, we freely talked about how times have definitely changed when it comes to doing business here in North Iowa.
After I arrived back at office, I scanned and then emailed the offer to the listing agent, and then changed my clothes and headed out to get some additional work done on my extended project, and in spite of being there for only about two hours, I did manage to get enough done to make that trip over worthwhile.
While working there alone, I began having thoughts about the ‘what if’ ‘D.T.’ does round up all the undocumented workers, and sends them all back to Mexico and Middle America. Well, after doing some critical forward thinking, I came to the conclusion that in the beginning, our food prices will be hitting the ceiling, and if those farmers who have enough reserves to bring in very expensive robotic machinery to do their planting, cultivating and harvesting, they’ll likely still be charging more for their produce, just so they can re-coup the money they had to pay for their AI-assisted automations.
Now after thinking even more critically forward, I can only imagine how many farmers who help keep food on our table, will end up going into foreclosure and/or selling their farms to the highest bidders. Of course we all know, those that have deep enough pockets to automate, will be buying out the farmers who’re financially unable to make the transition from human workers to smart machines. In the end, you can be sure we’ll be seeing high food prices stuck at those levels because the competition will no longer be there.
Ok, now my next million dollar question is, “Who’ll be feeding all those unemployed workers?” We all know many of them have work visas, while others do have their citizenship, and if the borders are closed and those small farmers are put out of business by corporate farmers, then there’ll be a whole heck of a lot more people out of work on both sides of the borders.
I’m not sure if I mentioned the fact that some weeks ago while at the stoplight on S. Federal where they’re pouring new concrete, there were nine workers there, and only one of them was Caucasian, so there you are. Where are we going to get the people to take the jobs most spoiled-rotten Americans don’t want to take? Yes, if our Nation goes down an isolationist path, there’ll be ‘yell’ to pay at the end of it.
Did you know that back in the 1930’s, our country’s leaders were following the same path, and guess what? That’s when Hitler, Mussolini and the Emperor of Japan decided to start invading weaker countries, which turned into WWII. I dare say there’s a whole heck of a lot of politicians who know little or nothing about our Nation’s and/or our world’s history. Just remember, history does repeat itself only if we allow it.
Having to make a quick trip over Clear Lake to get some signatures on a document, I happened to be driving down a street over there that was filled with lighted Christmas decorations, and the bulk of those yards had rather tall and illuminated candy canes,so I stopped and took the above photo. I think they need to rename that street ‘Candy Cane Lane’. I’m sure Alliant Energy is happy about all that added income those lights are generating for them.
