For The Next 50 Years

It was an interesting sight early this morning as I was driving toward the downtown and seeing off in the distance, a definite blanket of what we used to consider ‘ground fog’ which one would normally see in the low-lying areas during the Fall months. I guess it was just a reminder that Fall is around the corner, along with the majority of our city being located in a geographical ‘bowl’. Most don’t take the time to notice the fact that whenever one drives into our city from all directions, you’re slowly heading down into the ‘bowl’. Of course our early settlers decided on such a location because there were streams and rivers nearby which were in the beginning, their only sources of water, and shortly thereafter, they built water-powered mills which were used for various purposes included milling grain and cutting logs into building materials. My how times have changed.

Part of my day was spent over at my lakeshore listing in Clear Lake where I had to meet a certified drone specialist I hired to take aerial photos of the home which I’ll be posting out into the cyber-universe once they’re received back from the drone operator. I’m remaining hopeful they’ll be as good or better than expected.

With the eastbound Hwy 122 bridge still under construction, the traffic on 19th St. SW has become exceptionally heavy, and of course many of those drivers seem to be all the more ‘issy’ behind their wheels in having to take a detour. I’ll never understand why some have to take it personally because there’s nothing they can do about it.

When I arrived back at office, I was expecting to find an offer from another agent in an email on my new listing, and only because a message was left earlier saying they were in the process of writing one. Oh well, the buyer must’ve had last-minute second thoughts.

I finally managed to have my hair cut today which was long overdue, so I’m now feeling back to myself again. I’ll never for the life of me understand how some men can allow their hair to grow out of control, and especially those who have thick hair which is hard to manage, and even more so when it’s hot and humid outdoors. I’m now good to go for another three weeks.

We had a second showing on my listing over at 325 – 10th St. NW late this afternoon, so hopefully the buyers will soon be comfortable enough to make an offer on it. As far as I’m concerned, that home is one of the best-built homes I’ve had listed in some time, and for whatever reason, it’s been under the radar for much too long.

As I was shuffling thru notes I’d taken in recent months which were building up on my desktop, I happened upon one which I saved from listening to one of my past instructors, so I decided to go on Youtube and see if I could find the motivational speaker’s ‘5 minutes for the next 50 years’, so I plugged in the title followed by his name which is Matthew McConaughey, and wouldn’t you know, it popped right up, so I clicked on it and watched it. Oh my goodness! I couldn’t believe how many of his words have been part of my MO for a number of years, and even more so since the pandemic arrived. Without a doubt, I would strongly recommend that all of you take the five or so minutes to watch and listen, and if there’s but one comment that ‘sticks’, then it would have been well worth it. What I appreciated the most, is when he mentioned our needing to discover who we’re not, so we can work all the harder at becoming who we are. Yes, that short video was the highlight of my day.

I also had another heartfelt conversation with a customer regarding how our society has evolved to a point where many adult children of our elderly have little or no concern about the health and welfare of their parents who made many sacrifices for them from the time they were born, which is why we see nearly all of them ending up in assisted living or nursing homes. Whenever I come across someone who’s taken the initiative to make their aging parent or parents more safe and comfortable in their own homes, or even taking them into their residences, I freely say to them, “You may not know it now, but you’re already earning your wings.” I know from first-hand experience how much more our elderly can enrich our lives, if only we take the time to pay more attention to them.

Tonight’s One-liner is: To the living we owe respect, but to the dead we owe only the truth.
